Connecticut based flutist Abigail Kegel Walsh has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States. She is currently performing and teaching in the New England area while finishing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The Hartt School under Janet Arms. She teaches a Flute Techniques course to the undergraduate flute studio, and a Woodwind Techniques course to music education majors at the Hartt School. She is also a flute instructor in the Hartt School's Community Division, the Ethel Walker School, and maintains a private studio in her home.


A versatile musician, Abby has established herself as a successful performer, competitor, orchestral musician, and teacher.

An Iowa native, Abby held the Principal Flute position with the Ottumwa Symphony and the Oskaloosa Symphony from 2003-2006, and served as the wind contractor for both. She performs regularly with Hartford Opera Theater, New Music Hartford, and the Wildwood Groups. Abby has also performed with the Dubuque Symphony, Iowa's Center for New Music, and held a first flute position with the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band.

A sought after teacher, Abby has taught privately in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City (IA), Hartford, and Vernon (CT). Her students have been selected through competitive audition to the National Flute Association's National High School Flute Choir, Connecticut Eastern Regional Band, Connecticut Northern Regional Orchestra, Connecticut All-State Band, Iowa All-State Band and have won the Miss Connecticut USA 1st Runner Up (talent award), Iowa State Solo Contest Outstanding Performance Award (Best of Center), and the Iowa Flute Wonders Competition. Abby has served on the faculty of West Music Conservatory, and been a faculty artist for the Hartt Summer Flute Institute and the Five Seasons Chamber Music Festival. During the 2005-2006 academic year Abby was the Teaching Assistant in Flute at the University of Iowa where she taught non-music major flute lessons, basic flute techniques to music education majors, and coached undergraduate chamber music ensembles. During the year, The University of Iowa was host to the Iowa Flute Festival where Abby was the Flute Wonders competition coordinator, as well as a performer.

Abby earned her Bachelor of Music degree from The University of Iowa where she studied with Tadeu Coelho, Robert Dick, and Tamara Thweatt as a scholarship student. Among her notable undergraduate accomplishments are winning The National Flute Association's 2004 Masterclass Performers Competition, the Iowa City Music Study Club Competition, The University of Iowa Chamber Music Competition, and being a finalist in The University's Concerto Competition. In 2008 she completed her Master of Music degree from the Hartt School where she studied with Janet Arms and John Wion. During her Masters studies Abby along with Jared Elder, guitar, won second place in the Emeritus Recording Competition. She also earned a place in the Hartt School's tuition-free 20/20 chamber music program and was a semi-finalist in the National Flute Association's 2008 Piccolo Artist Competition. In February 2009 she won second place in the Washington Flute Society Young Artist Competition.

Her primary flute instructors include Janet Arms, John Wion, Tamara Thweatt, Robert Dick, Tadeu Coelho, Betty Bang Mather, and Margaret Linnan Kegel. She has enjoyed additional study with Angelieta Floyd, Keith Underwood, Ransom Wilson, Claudia Anderson, and Jane Walker. She has performed in masterclasses with Trevor Wye, Alberto Almarza, Clare Southworth, Christina Smith, Rachel Brown, Leone Buyse, Rhonda Larson, John Bailey, Barbara Hopkins, and Clifford Benson.

Abby performs on a Miyazawa 14k gold Boston Classic flute with a platinum riser, and a Keefe piccolo.
